More Resources

There are many books and web sites that are helpful to cell phone software developers. Here are some. As you find additional, useful ones, please post to our listserv, and I'll add them to this page. (Please include a sentence or two about the book)

Books

Of course, there are many books on J2ME and mobile software development. I include only ones that I have read and find helpful. If a book you like is not included, please let the listserv know.

This is a great introduction to J2ME - Matt Brenner)

ISBN: 1-59059-479-7

An introduction to Android

Informational Web Sites

I am pleased to provide links to web sites. I am reluctant to provide links to specific resources at web sites, because as the sites get modified the links change, and I don't want to spend time chasing the ever-changing. What I will do is provide a web site and a phrase; you can visit the web site, and type the phrase into the web site's search engine to find the resource. It isn't perfectly direct, but it avoids broken links.

Nokia provides a great deal of information through this web site:

forum.nokia.com

You can register (for free) or not. Access to some resources is only available to registered visitors. Some of the information is Nokia specific, but a great deal of the information is valuable whether you use Nokia phones or not.

Nokia has posted a collection of 400 J2ME code snippets:

forum.nokia.com
'400 code snippets'

The collection includes snippets in Symbian C++ and Java ME.

Apps, Themes, Ringtones, and Tools and Libraries

There are many sites from which you can download and upload J2ME applications, themes, ringtones, etc.

This site offers a wide variety of everything for a wide variety of phones. Much is free:

www.mobileheart.com

A very interesting comilation of open source J2ME software (all free) with links to the projet websites where the software may be obtained. The site focuses on tools and libraries rather than apps. Some might be very useful to support the study of computer science:
